We don’t get too many rainy days in Calgary, but last summer had a few, and somehow Grace and Alex timed their day perfectly around it. This was one of those weddings where the weather added so much more than it took away. If anything, it made the entire day feel a little more cinematic. If you want to see their full wedding film, you can watch it here: full wedding film.
A Rainy Calgary Wedding at St. Mary’s Cathedral + Trolley 5 | August 2025
Grace and Alex spent the morning getting ready separately, each surrounded by their closest people, while the anticipation quietly built on both sides. Their ceremony took place at St. Mary’s Cathedral, and just as it began, the rain started to fall. Being inside, it created this sort of cozy, intimate atmosphere. There was soft light coming through, and a quiet calm that you don’t always get on sunny days.
By the time we stepped out for portraits, the rain had passed, leaving behind that moody, overcast sky that photographers dream about. Everything felt a little richer. It worked especially well with Grace’s tropical-inspired details, which popped beautifully against the soft backdrop.
We started with family photos, moved into wedding party portraits, and then gave Grace and Alex a few minutes to themselves to just breathe and take it all in.
From there, we made our way to Trolley 5, where everything was already coming together for the evening. We spent some time capturing the reception space and all of the thoughtful details Grace and Alex had planned. We also snuck out for a few golden hour photos during the reception. Even after a rainy start, Calgary gave us just enough light downtown to create something really special.
The reception at Trolley 5 was an absolute party. The dance floor was full all night, and there were so many fun, unexpected moments. From her dad fully committing to the Napoleon Dynamite dance to the little minions sitting on top of their cake.
Wedding days like this are a reminder that everything doesn’t have to go perfectly to feel perfect. Sometimes the rain, the mood, and the in-between moments are what make it unforgettable.
