Whether you’re envisioning a cabin, a hotel with mountain views, or an Airbnb close to trailheads, choose a place that supports the flow of your day and your planned activities.
Step 4: Finalize Your Timeline
This is where your day really starts to come together. Your photographer can help create a timeline that accounts for travel time, hiking, ceremony moments, and intentional pauses to soak it all in. Think sunrise or sunset light, reading letters, popping champagne, or a post-ceremony picnic — your elopement timeline should feel relaxed and personal, not rushed.
Step 5: Find Your Officiant
There are so many incredible officiants in Alberta, many of whom can be found through the Alberta government website or local Facebook groups. Your officiant will guide you through the legal side of things, including the marriage license process, which requires visiting any Alberta registry with two pieces of valid ID.
Step 6: Find Your Hair and Makeup Artist
Choose an artist whose style aligns with your vision and who can work with your getting-ready location, whether that’s a hotel room, Airbnb, or salon. Many artists are experienced with early mornings and mountain locations, which makes a big difference on elopement days.
Step 7: Find Your Florist

If you’re planning your ceremony at an unregistered site (like the shores of Lake Louise), you’ll need to submit a free online registration form with Banff National Park. This simply notifies the park of your ceremony and confirms you’re following park guidelines.
Step 10: Obtain Your Marriage License
Marriage licenses are obtained in Alberta with two pieces of valid ID. Your registry agent will let you know if any additional documentation is needed. Once completed, your marriage is legally recognized across Canada and internationally.
When to elope in the Canadian Rockies
SPRING (APRIL – JUNE):
In spring, the mountains are waking from their winter slumber. You will find blooming wildflowers and some more mild temperatures. This is a great time since it is a little less crowded, but you will still need to be mindful of that certain locations may not be as accessible due to snowy conditions!
SUMMER (JUNE – AUGUST):
During summer you will get vibrant greenery, lots of wildflowers and much longer daylight hours. You will have longer days and more options for epic locations and hiking adventures. Summer of course means warmer temperatures, but bigger crowds especially in places like Banff. There are many hidden gems in the Canadian Rockies that if you are willing to go the extra mile, you can still find beautiful, secluded locations.
FALL (SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER):
The Rocky Mountains transform into a canvas of warm hues, offering a cozy and intimate elopement experience. The crowds start to fall away and the experience gets a little bit more intimate.
WINTER (DECEMBER – MARCH):
If you want to embrace the magic of a wintery landscape and snow-covered mountain peaks, winter is your time! Bonus, you’ll also get less crowds! Ideal for couples looking for a unique and cozy celebration but expect cold temperatures when eloping outdoors (you will definitely need a jacket!!) and limited options for hiking and high alpine locations.
