How to Get to Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake is one of the most breathtaking (and photographed) spots in Banff National Park, but since you can’t drive there yourself, getting there takes a little planning. Whether you’re heading up for a sunrise session, an elopement, or simply to capture those iconic turquoise views. This guide covers everything you need to know, and be sure to scroll to the end for photos that show just how magical this spot really is!

3 Ways to Get to Moraine Lake

1. Parks Canada Shuttle (Most Budget-Friendly)

Parks Canada Moraine Lake Shuttle

This is the most cost-effective option. Shuttles depart from the Lake Louise Ski Hill and take you straight to Moraine Lake.

  • Shuttle tickets sell out about a month in advance, but Parks Canada releases a small batch of last-minute tickets 48 hours before at 8 AM Mountain Time, set an alarm and log on early!
  • No sunrise shuttles are offered through Parks Canada.
  • Tickets are round-trip and can include stops at both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise.

2. Private Shuttles & Tour Companies

This option works best if you want to catch sunrise or enjoy a more flexible schedule. Companies like Moraine Lake Bus Company and Fairview Limousine offer sunrise departures and pickups from various points in the town of Lake Louise.

  • Prices typically range from $35–$100 per person.
  • These can sell out too, but there’s often a better chance of snagging last-minute spots.
  • Perfect for early-morning sessions or couples who want a relaxed schedule.

3. Stay at Moraine Lake Lodge

If you’re lucky enough to book a room at Moraine Lake Lodge, guests are among the only people allowed to drive up directly. It’s definitely the most expensive option, but waking up to that view (and avoiding the morning rush) is an unforgettable experience.

What to Expect at Moraine Lake

  • The View: There’s a short, 10-minute uphill trail that leads to the famous Rockpile viewpoint, totally worth it for the shots. If you can make it for sunrise, it’s absolutely magical (though there’s always a chance the weather doesn’t cooperate, hopefully the odds are in your favour!).
  • The Crowds: It’s a very popular tourist destination. If you’re coming for photos, especially at sunrise, expect lots of people and photographers.
  • Canoe Rentals: Available in summer if you want to get those dreamy lake photos on the water.
  • Season: Opens June – Thanksgiving weekend. Snow can linger in early June and often returns by October, which actually makes for beautiful snowy-lake photos before it freezes!
  • Elopement Note: Space around the viewpoint is quite limited, so it’s best suited for very small elopements, just the couple and officiant. If you’re planning a larger celebration, consider doing your ceremony elsewhere and coming to Moraine Lake afterward for portraits.
